The ARIA Team

ARIA’s principal responsibility is to manage and invest the Funds to maximise the benefits to members. We have a fiduciary duty to act in members’ best interest.

Your Trustees

The Minister for Finance and Administration appoints the Trustees of ARIA, nominated for their experience and knowledge by the employer and/or the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU). The Chairman is independent.

The Trustees are responsible for all aspects of management of the three Schemes and the ARIA Investment trust including investment strategy, administration and stakeholder communications.

   

Susan Doyle

Ms Susan Doyle - appointed Chairman on 28 July 2003 to 27 July 2006, reappointed to 27 July 2009

Ms Susan Doyle was appointed Chairman of ARIA on
28 July 2003.  Ms Doyle has many years experience in the area of superannuation and investments.  Ms Doyle has worked for Commonwealth Funds Management, Suncorp Insurance and Finance and IAG Ltd.  Ms Doyle currently holds several non-executive board positions including Guardian of the Future Fund.

David Connolly

Mr David Connolly AM - appointed 19 September 2002 to 18 September 2005, reappointed to 18 September 2008

Mr Connolly is also a member of the ARIA Audit and Risk Management Committee. Mr Connolly is Chairman of Rice Warner Actuaries and serves as a part-time member of the Administrative Review Tribunal the Refugee Review Tribunal and the Migration Review Tribunal. He was a career diplomat for a number of years and held the post of Australia’s High Commissioner to South Africa. Elected to the Australian Parliament (1974–1996), he served as Chair of the Public Accounts Committee and held various shadow portfolios, including superannuation and retirement incomes.

Steve Crane

Mr Steven Crane – appointed 1 October 2007 to 30 September 2010

Mr Crane is currently a Member of the ABN AMRO Advisory Council, a Director of Transfield Services and the Sunnyfield Association; Chairman Global Valve Technology Limited and Deputy Chairman of Australian Chamber Orchestra Pty Limited. He started his career in the financial markets with AMP and has held various positions including Chief Executive of BZW Australia and ABN AMRO. He has also previously been a Non-Executive Director of listed companies Investa Property Group (Chairman 2006-2007), Foodland Associates (2003-2005) and Adelaide Bank (2005 -2007).

Peter Feltham

Mr Peter Feltham - appointed 1 July 2005, reappointed to 30 June 2009

Mr Feltham is currently an Industrial Officer with the CPSU, the Community and Public Sector Union. He has worked for the CPSU and its predecessor organisations for more than 20 years in a range of capacities at the state and national level as both an employee and official. Prior to this Mr Feltham worked for 10 years in the Federal Public Service.

Margaret Gilespie

Ms Margaret Gillespie – appointed 1 October 2007 to 30 September 2010

Ms Gillespie is a former Assistant National Secretary of
the Community and Public Sector Union (2003 -2008).
She served two terms as a Vice President of the ACTU
(2003 -2007).

Winsome Hall

Ms Winsome Hall - appointed 1 July 1996, reappointed to 30 September 2008

Ms Hall is Chair of the ARIA Audit and Risk Management Committee. Ms Hall is a non-executive director of various entities including State Super Financial Services, appointed by ARIA, Zurich Australian Superannuation Limited and various commercialisation funds as a nominee of the Westscheme. She is an ongoing consultant with the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia. Ms Hall was previously a Senior Advisor in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet and was Secretary of the ACT Branch of the CPSU from 1989 to 1993.

Dennis Trewin

Mr Dennis Trewin AO – appointed 20 December 2007 to
30 September 2009

Mr Trewin is currently a statistical consultant having undertaken contracts for the United Nations, World Bank, OECD and the governments of Brazil, Korea and New Zealand. He is also Chairman of the Advisory Board of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies and Global Executive Board of the World Bank's International Comparison Program. Past roles have included head of the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Deputy Australian Statistician and Deputy Government Statistician in New Zealand.

Mr Trewin has been awarded an AO for his contribution to Australian and international statistics.

The Executive Team

 

Mr Lochiel Crafter – Chief Executive Officer

Lochiel has extensive experience in the financial services industry. He has previously worked for Westpac Investment Management, Commonwealth Investment Management, Mercury Asset Management and State Super Investment and Management Corporation.

For the past seven years Lochiel has worked in various roles with State Street Global Advisers including, until recently, Chief Investment Officer, Asia Pacific located in Singapore.

Lochiel has a Master of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Science (Honours1). He completed the Chartered Financial Analyst programme in 2000 and a Graduate Diploma of Financial Planning in 2004. He is currently working towards a doctorate in business administration.

Peter Carrigy-Ryan

Mr Peter Carrigy-Ryan – Chief Operating Officer

Peter Carrigy-Ryan has over 20 years experience in superannuation and financial services, and joined ARIA in January 2004.

Peter has previously been General Counsel and Company Secretary at Commonwealth Funds Management Limited, and was the principal of a consultancy business for 10 years prior to joining the staff of ARIA. As Chief Operating Officer, Peter is responsible for all operational, regulatory, compliance and external relations functions.

Peter has degrees in Arts and Law from the Australian National University.
Paul Watson

Paul Watson – Deputy Chief Executive Officer

Mr Watson was formerly the Deputy Executive Director of the Motor Trades Association of Australia (MTAA) Superannuation Fund, one of Australia’s largest occupation-based ‘for member profit only’ funds. Prior to this, he held the role of General Manager (Superannuation) at MTAA Super.

Mr Watson has also held roles as Senior Officer and Parliamentary Liaison Officer in several Federal Government agencies, where he contributed to the development of policy, design and delivery of targeted national and scheme education superannuation campaigns. He also assisted in the management of the federal parliamentary superannuation scheme and productivity-based superannuation schemes.

In 2006, Mr Watson was awarded the Fund Executive of the Year Award, presented by industry body Fund Executives Association Limited (FEAL). Paul has formal qualifications in management, financial planning and administration and is currently undertaking the Harvard Business School’s Program for Leadership Development.

Alison Tarditi

Alison Tarditi – Chief Investment Officer

Alison Tarditi joined ARIA after 6 years as the Director of Equity Strategy with Citigroup in Australia. Previous to this position, Alison worked for BT Funds Management as the Head of Research and Quantitative Strategy in the Asset Allocation area.  In this role, she had responsibility for global macroeconomic strategy and the design and implementation of quantitative processes for analysing global equity and fixed income markets. Previously, she was the Head of the Financial Conditions Section in the Economic Analysis Department of the Reserve Bank of Australia.  

Alison has a first class Honours degree and University Medal from James Cook University and a Masters of Science from the London School of Economics, under scholarship from the Reserve Bank of Australia. She also sits on the Investment Committee of the Salvation Army Board in Australia.
